Career

Clara was 16 years old in 1904, living at home with her parents in Pine Island, MN. Her Dad was pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pine Island, MN.

The young girl was beginning to wonder what she would do with her life. She had long dreamt of being a Red Cross nurse. A lack of funds made that dream impossible. Perhaps it was this need of funds and the Red Cross dream that influenced Clara's bad decision to purchase a dress making course from a traveling peddler. Clara found she was to shy to sell her goods in the Millinery shop to purse her trade. As always, the Lord had a plan and this skill didn't go to waste. Her sewing skills allowed her and her young son to survive tough times when they moved to New Ulm in 1928. She would sew the dress in which her mother is buried.

Age 17 in 1905
It was not unusual for the older children of large families to leave home at an early age. She was the second oldest of 10 children. Her youngest brother was born in 1903. Two years later Clara left home at the age of 17. She lived with the Miller family in Zumbrota, MN. It is likely this friendship was formed during the time her Dad served the Zumbrota congregation.

Martin was taking a course at the Red Wing Metropolitan Business College. He convinced young Clara to enroll in a stenography course. There was a large demand for this type of work. Some of the courses were 4 year programs. Clara's was a summer course which cost her $40. It is possibly the best $40 she ever spent. This education served her well over the course of her life.

Clara appears to have held two jobs after graduating from business school. She makes mention of working for six months at the Chicago Great Western Railway to gain work experience. Although she doesn't mention it in her writings, a letter from an employment agency,S.A. Morawetz & Co., indicates Clara also worked for them during this same time period. She was hired directly out of school to work for the company, not as a temp to work somewhere else. I believe this is a compliment to Clara's competency and character.

Clara secured a job with the International Harvester company in Watertown, SD, shortly after quitting her MN jobs. It is unclear where she moved. I figure it was either with her parents in South Shore, SD, or Watertown, SD.

She successfully worked at IH for 10 years. Within 4 years she was promoted and received a substantial raise. See More

It is unclear when Clara started teaching for the Granger Business School, but we know she stopped teaching at the school in 1909. No mention of the school is made in Clara's writings. I believe she was working two jobs during this time. She did save a 1909 letter from the school which is addressed to Clara at South Shore. Clara's parents were living in South Shore. Perhaps they were just being used as a mail contact address by Clara.

International Harvester gave Clara a leave of absence so she could teach at the AZ Apache Mission for the 1913-1914 school year. I know Clara lived in Watertown, SD and attended St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Watertown in 1910. I assume she lived in Watertown until 1917 when she and Alfred Baur married.

Clara taught one year at St. John's Lutheran School, Cedar Mills, MN. Specific year not known.

Perhaps I will find additional material in the future which will help fill in more of the holes.

Notes:

A lady at St. John's has a photo album with pictures related to Clara. It looks like they may have remained in contact over the years including when Clara lived in Edmonds. Her name was Doris Schlueter. Can also keep an eye out for Esther Witte Kurth and Lydia Schulte Zummach.
