Introduction


From Clara Hinderer's Written Family History

I had been able to get a job with International Harvester CO. in Watertown, SD and worked for them a total of 10 years. I took one year (1913 to 1914) out of that period of time and went down to Arizona to teach in the Apache mission for Pastor Hardersin Globe, AZ. H Work among the Apaches was not easy with disease and sanitary conditions as they were, and yet many of the experiences were most wonderful. Pastor Harders wrote some books about that period of time among the Apaches, and those books, YAALAHN and DOHASHTDA, published by our Synod’s Northwestern Publishing House have still been available throughout these many years, and are still good reading.

Our Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod was the first church body to carry out mission work among the Apaches since they were considered a fierce tribe and no other denomination was interested in starting work among them.

Our first missionaries put together an alphabet for the Apaches since they had no alphabet. This is still in use today, and our work among these people is very much a part even of the secular history, our work is acknowledged by historians to this present day.

We have many congregations and schools (Kindergarten through High School) among these people, and have the East Fork Nursery which was started my our missionary at the turn of the century to rescue the children that were left to die due to Indian tradition and superstition.

If twins were born, one was taken into an isolated area and abandoned to die, or if there was the slightest imperfection at birth, it was also removed and never seen again. It was these children our missionaries nurtured at the East Fork Nursery.

Tons of stuff still missing in the transcript, but it's confirming that somebody decided that she would be fit for the job and would accept her.

Something about "point 7" (on that list with 10 items you mentioned elsewhere?) should be considered in particular. After that, lots of things illegible.

In Globe there was no compulsory education and so they had a hard time to get the Indians to send their kids. Some more detail on what they're doing about it, but I couldn't decipher it yet.

From what I can see, there are up to three names in this letter: potentially at the end of the first line (I'm sending you this letter to your daughter on X's orders), definitely at the end of the second line (Mr. P. Rucky? told us that they consider her fit for the post), and the signature.

This is a 10 item list concerning Clara Hinderer's teaching at the Apache Mission school. It was sent to her father, Paul Hinderer.


The Indian School in Globe, Arizona

1. The work is primarily mission work. The children like their parents shall be brought to knowledge of the Lord and Savior.

2. School time is 9 to 12 and 1 to 3. There are classes in religion, reading, writing, calculations, singing, drawing, handcraft.

3. Every day the school must be, under supervision of the teacher, [cleaned] by the children after school.

4. The sick and missing must be followed up on and contact between teacher & parents in the [church service] must be kept up.

This is a 10 item list concerning Clara Hinderer's teaching at the Apache Mission school. It was sent to her father, Paul Hinderer by an unknown person from WI. (note: It would help if I can get the city from the top of the July 4th letter.)

Background Information:

In 1913, 25 year old Clara Hinderer is living in Watertown, SD and her 50 year old father Paul Hinderer is a Pastor in South Shore, SD. Clara doesn’t have any formal teaching education, however, both her mom and dad were well educated.

She is attending St Martin's Lutheran Church, Watertown, SD where her future husband's Uncle William Sauer is the pastor (it is possible he got asked to recommend her). Clara is a Sunday School teacher and working for the International Harvester company.

On July 4, 2013, a letter is written to a Clara’s dad, Pastor Paul Hinderer. It is written by somebody living in WI. I can’t make out the name. Probably somebody from the below name list. The letter is being written on the orders of ???(possibly Kock).

The main thought appears to be that Clara Hinderer is considered suitable for the work. It contains a separate piece of paper on which a list is written. Paul Hinderer’s name is written on the back of the list. A directive is given to pay special consideration to “item 7.”

In July 15, 2013, Gustav Harders wrote a letter to Paul Hinderer. He informed Paul he had forwarded a letter he received from Paul to O.H. Kock in Columbus, WI. Harders had been told to “clearly describe the matter.” (Kock would write Clara on the 22nd after she accepted the position)

On June 16, 1913, Clara Hinderer received a letter from Gustav Harders. He is happy Clara is coming to Globe. He asks if she has a job description and she should write to O.H. Kock to get one.

On July 22, 2013 O.H. Kock writes Clara and expresses thanks she is going to Globe. He notes that Harders has answered her questions.

Clara stops teaching in 2014 and gets married.

Worthy Young Lady!

Mr. Missionary Harders has given me your letter of acceptance, I was very happy about it, and thank God that he has given us again a teacher for our mission school in Globe. And he, who is faithful to God, will now give you also deep affection for the poor Indian children, that they may be given abundant gifts, that through your faithful service the kingdom of God will be built among the Indians of Arizona. Superintendent Harders has answered your questions. Only I would like to inform you that your Resise expenses will be paid to Arizona from the Mission Fund. Inquire, please, how much the travel expenses will be. Disclose it to me, and write to me at the same time, when you intend to travel. I will then take care that you receive the money at the right time. They then reside directly to Globe and Missionary Harders will introduce you to the school.

1913 - Ernest G.E. Bergmann Globe, AZ Postcard

The backside says "For Winfred from Ernest B." It sounds like this was given to Clara Hinderer to give her little brother who was age 10.


Clara Hinderer taught at the Globe, AZ Apache Mission school from 1913-1914.

The back side says Für Winfried von Ernest B. Für Winfried. Ernest B. most likely refers to G.E. Bergemann, who was the secretary of the German Ev. Lutheran Synod of Wisconsin and other States at the time.

This post card of Globe, AZ was probably made around 1910. It is the only postcard I have seen with the different mailing prices based on whether a message written on the card or not. It was produced by the Albertype Co. of Brooklyn, NY.

According to web resources, most pictures for this company were taken by its agents and are unique from each other.

He was not quite certain whether or not you would accept a call and asked me to write directly to you. I would have done this in the first place, but did not know your address.

Kindly inform me, if possible, at an early day, if you would be willing to accept a teaching position in our Indian Mission at Bylas, Arizona. Grades to be taught: 1-4 and Beginners grade. Pastor Hillmer, missionary at the station, teaches the upper grades.

Confident that you will give the matter your serious and prayerful consideration and favor me with an early reply I am with cordial greetings.

  • Frankenmuth is a result of an Indian Mission effort by the Michigan Synod. The mission got passed of to other synods and the Missouri Synod ended up with it. As the Indians were relocated, so was the mission. The final days of the mission were Northwest of me on the shores of Pelican Lake!
