My paternal Grandma Clara Hinderer Baur died in 1982. She had lived with my Dad and Mom since the 1950s. She was always a part of our three generation home.

Dad and Mom packed Grandmas's earthly belongings into an old box. The box sat unopened and forgotten on the shelf for the next 35 years. Several years ago at a family gathering of Mom and my siblings the box was opened. The box was packed so tightly it was difficult to remove things. It was a case of knowing if the stuff came out it would never fit back in the box.

After a very cursory look, it was decided I should take the box home and sort through it. Mom made me promise not to throw ANYTHING away. I don't think she dreamt about what all the box contained. It opened a door to a past which has always been a mystery and few of us Baur kids knew about.

Over time, other family members have contributed family pictures and artifacts to the Cowtales project. It has blossomed to include all extended family either related by blood or marriage. Dates covered range from the 1830s to the present.

This is not meant to be a geneology site. It is intended to be a repository for family pictures and related material. Efforts have been made to make sure birth/death/etc dates for people are accurate. Some dates are from census records and some are from the dates recorded in other family records or pictures. I didn't make any huge effort to validate existing dates. Best guess dates for some events and pictures is based on recorded family events, other pictures, and secular and church history.

This site is the story of our ancestors. What role they played in history and how their lives compared to one another.

It is called Cowtales because we all seem to have a connection to the Jaus Farm. No matter where we fit into the extended tree, especially in the earlier days, the farm is where our lives intersect.

This site is dedicated to my paternal and maternal family lines; all of those connected by blood and marriage before and after.

Note: This site is currently being used to archive the pictures and organize/store information. Aesthetics are not at the top of my priority list.
