The Rev. Paul Hinderer was born October 30, 1862, in Wuerttemberg, Germany, the son of a teacher and musician. After graduating from a German university he emigrated to the United States in 1844. In order to prepare himself for the ministry he entered Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minn., and later attended school in St. Paul, MN. In 1886 he married Miss Clara (sic) Schneider, also a recent arrival from Germany. He served the following charges: La Crescent, MN, Goodhue, MN, [[Morton, MN, Poplar Grove, MN and South Shore, SD. After retiring for a few years in 1917 he served a mission in Portland, OR, and later Northwestern Lutheran Academy, Mobridge, SD, as dean. His final retirement began in 1929. His wife Clara (sic) died in Seattle, WA, December 31, 1936. After her death his health began to fail and March 19, 1940, the Lord called home His faithful servant at the home of his son Emanuel Hinderer in Waterville, WA, with whom he had made his home.

On Good Friday afternoon Rev. Fred Tiefel assisted by Rev. W. P. Amacher conducted the funeral service at Waterville and on Saturday Rev. Arthur Sydow officiated at a service at the Pacific Lutheran Cemetery, Seattle, WA, where his mortal remains were buried beside his wife. Rev. Tiefel's text was Mark 13: 35-37 and Rev. Sydow's John 19:41, 42.

He is survived by ten children, Immanuel and Paul of Waterville, Mrs. Julia Lemon, Mrs. Marie Harris, and Winfred of Seattle, Mrs. Clara Baur of New Ulm, Minn., Mrs. Elsie Eberly of Oroville, Theophil of Pullman, and Eugene of Bristol, Wisc., also thirty-seven grandchildren.

"And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righeousness as the stars for ever and ever." Aurthur Sydow.

Hi Mom, Mary A found some info on Paul Hinderer. Page 95 of http://dc.uwm.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1055&context=etd. I also typed this section here for easier reading. James Baur - Speaking of newspaper articles: one of the things I love about this research is the overlap. I was reading old newspapers on the Schilling family and discovered an article telling how Paul HInderer and Jacob Baur attended a convention to decide if DMLC should remain under the control of the MN Synod or not.

The US government investigated Great-grandpa Paul Hinderer as a spy during WWI. His church was painted yellow and he retired in 1917/1918.

There are four years missing from Great-grandpa Paul Hinderer's life. I believe this letter helps fill them. Written family records indicate he was a missionary in Portland, OR, after he retired. I have found one obituary which supports this. The obituary claims he spent 4 years in Portland.

This letter is the first record I have found concerning Portland. I am assuming Paul or his wife Klara is the author because I recognize some words.I do not know who it is addressed to.

This letter was written in 1925. That leaves us with a 7 year gap. According to the obit, 4 years were spent in Portland. It also says he served a short time as Dean at Northwestern Lutheran Academy, Mobridge, SD. No year and one record exists for this activity. He permanently retired in 1929 and moved to Seattle, WA. Paul's wife had diabetes.

Page 3 mentions Mount Rainier (which is 14,000 feet high and located in WA state). I don't recognize the name of the lake. It was/is a popular vacation spot. Clara, Alfred, and Ralph would make trips to WA, or else Paul is telling about new sites. He also mentions South Shore, the town of his old church. I thought I saw Mazeppa too, but can't find it again.

Page 4 La Crescent is mentioned. This was Paul's first church in 1886. Emanuel, Clara, and Julia were born there.

Upside down text on Page 1 appears to be school grades. Paul's son Winfred (Fred) was age 22 and attending college. Probably lived with parent when not in school. Letter could be written by Winfred.
