New Ulm - The Rev. Ralph and Lyla Baur returned to their original home area in October when they moved to New Ulm from Edmonds, WA.

Rev. Baur retired Oct. 1 after more than 41 years in the ministry of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. He grew up in New Ulm and attended schools her and his wife is from the Gibbon area.

The Baur's had lived at Edmonds, a suburb of Seattle, WA, since 1955. He was the pastor of Salem Lutheran Church, Edmonds, WA during that time and a number of students in his congregation have come to New Ulm to attend Dr. Martin Luther College. This year there are three.

His mother, Clara Baur, was secretary to the superintendent of New Ulm Public Schools in the 1930s and 1940s. Rev. Baur, whose father was also a pastor, attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and the high school department of DMLC, and continued his education at Northwestern College, Watertown, WI and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon, WI. He moved from New Ulm in 1947. Rev. Baur's first parish was at Broken Bow, NE where he served as pastor for eight years before going to Edmonds.

He served on the Pacific Northwest Mission Board for 25 years - 10 of those as chairman - and was actively involved in opening mission in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Washington and British Columbia.

Mrs. Baur also attended DMLC in New Ulm and taught in Wisconsin and Michigan before marriage. Her sister, Myrtle (Mrs. Harvey Meyer) lives in New Ulm and another sister and a brother live at Gibbon. They are Marvel (Mrs. Elton Vorwerk) and Roman Jaus.

In recent years, Mrs. Baur has been active in the travel field with American Travel Company. She has traveled to many areas in the United Stated and the world with the Hawaiian Islands and Alaska as her favorite places.

The Baurs have seven children. All attended WELS schools in the Midwest including MLA and DMLC in New Ulm. Tow sons are still at home. Paul is a student at Northwestern College and Ron, who is working in New Ulm at Happy Joe's and Randall's Value Center and plans to attend college in Florida next fall.

Two of their sons are on the West Coast. One with a commercial fishing vessel in the Bering Sea and the other with Xerox Corporation in computer servicing for the Boeing Company. The other three children are involved in the work of WELS congregations in Wisconsin.
