  • "My schooling???????

First of all, I am most thankful for the parochial schools I was able to attend. What a blessing they are. Nothing...NOTHING...can ever take their place.

Of course went to the Moltke Lutheran School. We had male teachers...2 classrooms, one in each of two separate school buildings...die Kleine Schule (grades 1-4) and die Grosze Schule (grades 5-8).

When in 8th grade, the teacher became ill and we got students from DMLC to fill in for either 4 or 6 weeks at a time......one of them later married a preacher who became I think, our WELS pres. Karl Mischke. Don't know IF having these teachers influenced me to want to go to DMLC but do remember writing to Prof. Schweppe and asking IF he could come and speak with my Dad so I could go to DMLC. Got a reply and said he couldn't come......don't know IF my Dad read the letter or not.

We got a new pastor when I was in 8th grade and started late with instructions for confirmation. Our class was the first to be confirmed in English and I have been very thankful for that since I learned the Catechism in English. We were confirmed on May 14th, 1944...not on Palm Sunday, which was different at the time.

Went to the Gibbon Public School for my freshman year in HS and then my dad approached me and said IF I want to go to DMLC/HS for the next year I could and did.

Quite a few Moltke kids started going there also and ended up in the WELS teaching/preaching ministry....one even being pres. of our Seminary...Armin Panning. When Paul Baur graduated from the Sem. I spoke with Armin, and afterwards Paul told me that it seemed so different/unusual to see his Mom speaking and laughing with the Pres. of the Sem.

After graduating from HS I went on to college, put my name out for going Emergency teaching, was assigned to teach 2nd grade at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, WI. Went to DMLC Summer School and then folks took me to Milwaukee. Had a beautiful facility there, even a bowling alley for the men who gathered every Monday evening. Church was old and beautiful as well.

The spring when I was there, the first black family moved into the area and now it is all black and has been for many years. I would pass the front of a business when walking to and from school and this was the first I ever saw a TV.....when passing, of course."

I attended 1 year plus summer school at DMLC for the 1948-1949 school year. Went out emergency teaching for the 1949-1950 school year at Bethesda Lutheran School on the N. end of Milwaukee.

Unrelated info......That spring a black family moved into the area, the very first but the entire area changed within a matter of a very few years.

Rules at DMLC were that one could/would go out emergency teaching only one year, but the Monroe, MI congregation needed a teacher and I was permitted to accept the Call they extended to me.

Went to summer school again for the 1950 summer, taught the year 1950-1951, school let out some days into June, Dad came from NE to pick me up, dropped me off in MN, he to NE to conduct Sunday services, came back for Mon. rehearsal and we got married Tuesday evening at the Moltke church. Hirsches were there and some other NE parishioners.....

I would have been 19 when Dad first proposed but I didn't accept since I had accepted the Call to MI. So, I would have been 20 when we became engaged. He mailed my my engagement ring so I would receive it in March on his Deceased Dad's birthday as a way of remembering each/both events.

  • Hahahahahaha! I was thinking that how unusual it was that she was able to safely walk to and from school all alone. I student taught in North Milwaukee and a young white woman wouldn't be able to do that now.

Lydia Jaus's China Cabinet recollection from Lyla Jaus

The one I have was Tanta Anna Gruenhagen's Interesting that Tanta Lydia also had one. The other 'chest' you see in the picture, Geraldine has. Will have to ask Geraldine about all of this.

We were in the Midwest when Tanta Anna died, with Dad being at a Synod Conv., so we got to take the china closet back with us. Dad built a box for on the top of the car, and when in the Mts. we hit a very strong wind and it blew off the lid, BUT it blew off and nothing broke, but took some effort to get it all together so we could be on our way again.
