Notes from Lyla Jaus:

  • Funerals were the high light of his ministry, since the joys of heaven are being experienced by those he learned to love, even though he feels the great bereavment by those left behind, but in turn can also remind them of the love of our Savior.
  • Marvel Jaus would not wait for Ralph to graduate from school, so Ralph had to take the younger sister.
  • Ralph ate gruetzwurst along with everyone else during our courtship and it was only after we were married a while that I found out he really didn't care for it at all.
  • Mrs. Aufderheide Sr. made the remark a few years ago that she doesn't think Ralph could have done any better in finding a wife. To this day he doesn't really doesn't know which way to interpret it -- whether it was his inabilities, or that she thought he did a good job.
  • Only way Ralph remembers which year we were married is by figuring our what kind of car he was driving.
  • Ralph's hobby is making sausage and cutting meat.

Dad's white legs. :) I don't remember seeing Dad ever in a swimsuit.

Here is a 4 generation picture from 2010. Dad, Ralph Baur, had a stroke prior to this visit. I still to this day do not believe he knew who I was. When I asked him he said in his kidding and protective way, of course I know who you are. We took Dad out to his old churches, the farm, his parents grave site, see his house from the outside where he grew up, and we were able to go inside some of the churches. Mom would remember maybe of the names and towns. I was so surprised that the churches were not locked up that was common I was told.

The Hirsch Family

by Jim Baur

My Dad's first Call was to Merna/Broken Bow, NE. The Hirsch family "adopted" the young pastor. Dad spent a lot of time on the Hirsch farm. Some of you might remember Prof. Eldon (Mike) Hirsch from your days at MLA in New Ulm. As I remember the story, Dad didn't have any shoes without holes in the soles. Arthur felt that it just wouldn't do for the preacher to get married in those shoes and lent Dad a good pair of dress shoes for the occasion. One of Eldon's favorite sayings was "Pastor Baur took me out of the farm field into the Lord's field." Dad interested Elton in attending MLA. The small NE church didn't have an organist. Elton was willing to learn, but the school wouldn't let him take organ because he was in high school, not college. Dad made a special request that Elton be allowed to take organ, which was granted. I have some pictures of Elton out at the Jaus farm and could never figure out how that relationship developed. Now I wonder if the Jaus family provided a "home away from home" for Eldon. Was it because Grandma and Lydia Jaus Scheele were friends? Is it possible that Eldon knew Putz Scheele? Eldon was born in 1932. Did he know Mom "way back then?" The Hirsch family was a life long friendship for Dad. He always spoke fondly of them. Eldon played the organ for Dad's funeral.

'From Lyla Jaus Baur'

Last Wed. went to a funeral and Prof Hirsch was there so visited with him for a bit. When the sons of June Ring returned the recliner/lift chair they had borrowed for their Mom, the one said that Hirsch had written a Hirsch family history for his kids. Spoke about that to Eldon and hope I get to read it some time. Guess he had only enuf printed for his family....and he said in very small print so it would be cheaper to print fewer pages.

He mentioned that he remembers that Dad's first Christmas in NE...1947...he took Eldon and his brother up to DMLC for the Concert and how very impressed he was with that beautiful music. That played a role in his enrolling for his Sr. year for the next school year.

When I was a student, I remember seeing this HS student practicing organ in the music hall and asked the person in charge how come this Sr. in the high school dept. could be taking organ, and was told that his pastor in Nebraska had asked for special permission to have him take organ lessons since he was the organist for his NE church. Who would have thought at the time that his pastor would be my husband within several years.

Eldon related to me about their visit to see us in WA and how everything was organized, including going clamming. His kids pulled and pulled on a clam neck so those must have been some Puget Sound clams. He said I made clam chowder and that we had a large dining table etc. etc. etc. Was interesting.

Ronald Baur - Dad would help me work on my car and drip cigar juice on my face as he looked under the hood and I was lying on floor under the engine looking up...yum... And all this between farting at random and not caring.
