Note from Pastor:

  • St. James Lutheran Church existed in Tolstoy until the late 1990's. The church building still stands in town and was purchased by the Seventh-day Adventists. Most members transferred to our congregation in Bowdle.
  • A few that lived south of Tolstoy joined Missouri Synod churches in that direction. One of those families takes care of the St. James Lutheran Cemetery that's along the highway north of town. All those who transferred to Bowdle have been called to eternal glory.
  • I'm including a photo of the Tolstoy page from the Dakota-Montana District's 75th Anniversary book (1995). You can see some history there. Sorry for the bad quality...I was using my phone and trying to keep it flat.
  • While the history in this book is excellent, I've noticed a few errors in spots. That by no means puts down the work of those who compiled it...it's simply much easier nowadays to find some of the information by using the internet, etc.
  • I'm thinking your great-grandfather's name would be one of those mistakes. "Theodore Bauer" is listed as serving from 1922-1924. It's possible that "Bauer" was simply a transcribing error, I suppose. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to find the church record books for the Tolstoy church.
  • As far as I know, this painting that hangs in the baptistery at St. John's in Bowdle is the only piece of the Tolstoy church we still have. Someone once told me that it was in the altar at St. James in Tolstoy.

Do you know the Pastor at St. John's in Hatchville, WI? Jacob Baur served there 1919-1922. They don't have a website and I'd like to email him. St. John's has an interesting history.

Other

We know that 20 year old Jacob left Germany because of religious persecution. He brought along his step-brother and four step-sisters. The youngest girl, Emma, was only two years old. William was four. Heinrike was sixteen. Barbara was seventeen and Mary was eighteen. What kind of persecution would it take for a forty five year old mother to let her children go off into a far away land? Was there family waiting on the other side of the Atlantic? I really don’t know!<re>f>Jim Baur</ref

"An Uncle Adam Baur is also mentioned in a note by Jacob Baur and that he was the Sheepherder of all the groups. Jacob Baur listed Uncle Adam as being the uncle who helped take care of him.

Jacob Baur's passport from Konigreich Wurttemberg was issued May 12. 1884. He helped bring his four half-sisters and one half-brother to America. His one daughter commented that all the Sauer's chould have been Baur's since they all lived with the Baur's at one time or another. While living with the Baur's at Johnson, MN, William Sauer was confirmed in 1895 and Lena Sommerfeld was confirmed in 1897."<ref>Baur-Sauer Anniversary Book </ref>

Jacob Baur was Immanuel's first resident pastor. In 1890 Jacob preached for the corner stone laying of the current St. Peter's church building. 61 years later his grandson, my Dad, would be married in the same church. It is very likely Jacob interfaced with Simon Jaus, Martin Jaus Sr. and others.

I have a favor to ask, Mom. I'm trying to locate a church that Great-grandpa Jacob Baur served at. The only reference I have to it is from the Baur history booklet you and Dad put together. It says "1919-1922 St. John's Lutheran Church, Hatchville, WI, Weston Township, Hatchville, WI."

All of my resource books are for MN. Can you find out for me if there is a St. John's in Hatchville. I did find an ELCA St. John's in Hatchville, but I'm not even sure where Hatchville is. According to one internet resource it is just a community, not a town.

The Sem Essay site has an essay called "Secret to Survival" about St. John's. It mentions "An older man, Pastor A. Bauer, served... 1919-1922."

The years are correct for Jacob. He would have been about 54. The numbers would just about work for Alfred.

Alfred's timeline. Died in 1927 at age 34. Started ministry in Cedar Mills in 1917 at age 24. Was age 22 in 1919.

Can you check your Synod handbook for me and see if it has more details for this congregation? Thanks! - JIm

Are you ready for the 1st skeleton in the closet? I have been in contact with another person on WikiTree, a genealogy site. She has traced a common ancestor to me from 1689. This side of the family ended up in Bremen, Germany. And yes, they were farmers.

As you may remember, Anna Bauer was Jacob Baur's mom and his stepdad was David Sauer. It turns out this was the 1st marriage for them both. Jacob was illegitimate.

Narratives

This is the 1888 wedding picture of my great-grandparents Emilie Sommerfeld and Jacob Baur. Emilie's mother's maiden name was Uttecht.

Jacob had emigrated from the Stuttgart area of the Kingdom of Wuertenburg (Germany) in 1885 with his 5 half-siblings (Sauer). He graduated in DMLC's (now Martin Luther College in New Ulm) first theology class in 1886. Zion Lutheran Church, Sanborn, MN was his first parish.

While at Zion, Jacob served the surrounding area including Sleepy Eye. Somewhere along the line he met Emilie, who was born in a log cabin South of Sleepy Eye.

21 year old Jacob married his 17 year old bride in 1888 in Springfield. Can you imagine having these two for your pastor and pastor's wife?!?
