Memories

Lois Scheele Hartman Tanta Anna is my favorite! She was so fun. Almost like a kid herself!

Ramona Potter How interesting! I was still a young girl when Tante Liddie died but my memories of her were of a woman always regally sitting EXACTLY like she is in the picture on the right. Tante Anna loved to tell the anecdote of her sitting like that while everyone else was busy working. When asked why she wasn't helping she replied "Ich wohl nicht und Ich wird night!" (I don't want to and I won't!). Tante Anna always said our entire heritage is made up of "Martha's"-except for one "Mary"-her sister, Lydia. Strange the tidbits our brains pick to remember. Unlike · Reply · 1 · 2 hrs Jim Baur Jim Baur Thanks for sharing the memory, Moni. I love the saying and will have to remember it.  :-) Tanta Liddie and Tanta Anna were always people who Mom talked about, but seemed so distant to me. I was totally shocked when I learned Kathryn actually knew the hallowed ladies. Now I learn that you met them too! It shows how how out of step I am. Like · Reply · 11 mins Ramona Potter Ramona Potter Tante Liddie is a vague memory but Tante Anna is a precious part of my childhood. Karen and I spent many many hours and overnights at her house. She was a mother to our mother and a grandmother to us.

Lois Scheele Hartman Same here

Lois Scheele Hartman Mrytle, Marvel and Mutzi were not Tantas to me (I guess because they were technically cousins (1st cousins once removed). But I did have Tanta Anna and Tanta "Ennie (not sure how to spell it, but we pronounced like a short e).

Ramona Potter The aunts were always Aunt, Auntie, etc. the great aunts were the Tante's. After Karen's daughter Deborah had Addie she started referring to me as Tante Mona when talking with Addie. I love it and consider it a compliment. And Jim, each family called Mom something unique to them. She was Aunt Myrtle to your family, Auntie Myrt to U Romans and Auntie Myrtle to A Marvel's kids. She enjoyed each name. And Lois, I agree that Tante Anna loved to play.

Karen Meyer Gilreath: I have a picture of Tante Anna on my cabinet...... She meant the world to me! Loved going to her house and drinking coffee with CREAM! Real cream! And playing in her attic with Mona...... Curling my hair with her sponge rollers..... She was the BEST!

Lois Scheele Hartman I loved her. She was so fun and loving Unlike · Reply · 1 · 8 mins Lois Scheele Hartman Lois Scheele Hartman I remember playing in her basement in New Ulm more than an attic.

Lois Scheele Hartman Let's see if I remember her address... something like 26 North Garden. And yep. We had a clear shot of Herman the German from her house. My other grandma and grandpa lived 3 blocks from there on Garden also. We of course walked from one to the other. Tanta Anna was more than a half mile. Almost a mile I think. On Franklin. Right across the street from the fair grounds.

KarenxSteven Gilreath Tante Anna had a brick two story house with garage.... And basement.

Lois Scheele Hartman I lived there with Tante Anna the summer before I was married. Walked every day from downtown New Ulm where I worked to her house.

Ramona Potter Karen and I were usually visiting T Anna while you were gone. I remember not being allowed in your room ( we usually had the run of the house). What I don't remember is ever seeing you there, tho, while we visited. Please fill in the memory blank spots from your memory store.

Lois Scheele Hartman I don't remember seeing you there either when I lived there. I worked a lot and probably went home to my folks in Arlington on weekends.

Lyla Jaus Baur concerning china cabinet - The one I have was Tanta Anna Gruenhagen's Interesting that Tanta Lydia also had one. The other 'chest' you see in the picture, Geraldine has. Will have to ask Geraldine about all of this.

We were in the Midwest when Tanta Anna died, with Dad being at a Synod Conv., so we got to take the china closet back with us. Dad built a box for on the top of the car, and when in the Mts. we hit a very strong wind and it blew off the lid, BUT it blew off and nothing broke, but took some effort to get it all together so we could be on our way again.
