  • Henry had auction on that farm when he was in 8th grade-fall of 1943 or spring of 1944. Your mother was also in 8th grade then. They moved to New Ulm after the auction.<ref>Lois L Bode's husband Mel</ref>

Memories

A "conversation" I had with Mom.

--- Me ---- Hi Mom. I am having trouble figuring out where Henry and Anna Gruenhagen’s farms were. I created a timeline of what I know about Henry’s locations. Could you look at it and tell me if any locations make sense to you.

Was their final farm in Gibbon. I have it in Buffalo Lake. The timeline can be seen at http://cowtales.biblegeek.org/wiki/Category:Henry_Gruenhagen.

This map may help give you a visual.

Mom ----

Their farm had the Buffalo Lake addr. The farm was located 1 mile W., then 1 mile N., then 3/4 mile W again..... of the Jaus farm. Something I would walk frequently as a kid, and took loads with the horse wagon.

EVEN....once...with the mules pulling the wagon............ .....This actually had been a No-No since mules were not as reliable in different/new situations, as were regular horses, but my Dad felt confident it would work well.......... with the mules and myself knowing each other after being in the fields together a lot, that I could do this and it worked out..

When Claire was here for Uncle Tony's funeral we drove up to that farm. The barn is torn down but house is there. We spoke with a fellow by some machinery........ and he was the present occupant, but do not recall IF he was the present owner.

Me ----

That helps a lot, Mom! Thanks!

It is interesting that their address was Buffalo Lake. Present day Buffalo Lake is about 14 miles north west of Gibbon. Buffalo Lake also shows up in old Baur stuff. That is one puzzle I have be unable to solve so far.

I know Gruenhagens had a farm up near Hallock (at least Henry did). Do you know if they had any other farms besides the one in Buffalo Lake and Hallock?

Mom ----

No.

Quotes

Person: "Heini. How is your liver?" Heini: "Look up my ass and see it quiver." <ref>As related by Jim Baur: Some remember it as shiver instead of shiver. Mom (Lyla Jaus Baur) first told me this story in 2013. Aunt Marvel and Uncle Roman came to visit so I asked them "How is your liver?" and they both told me where to look so I could see it quiver."</ref>
