History

Dorothy Eberly Allstot

My mother is Elsa Hinderer Eberly. I can remember her saying she was the first of the last five children in their family. I can remember visiting my Grandpa and Grandma Hinderer in Waterville, WA once. Also they visited us once in Oroville, WA. Grandpa Hinderer seemed very stern to me. Maybe it was because he spoke only German, which I didn't understand.

My mother and father, Harry Eberly, were both working in Uncle Manuel's wheat ranch when they were married. My mother cooked for the harvest crew, which was no small chore in those days. My father took care of the horses, machinery and drove the combine. Previously they had both lost spouses in the 1918 flu epidemic.

There were two children in our family--myself and Katharine. We were born in Waterville, WA. When I was five years old we moved to Methow, WA, where my folks managed the hotel there. They did all the work themselves. Here I started first grade.

While living in Methow our half-sister, Eileen Prange, came to live with us. She was a sophomore in high school and attending school in Pateros, MN. After two years we moved to Oroville. There my parents thinned apples and worked in the tomato cannery. My father did all the mechanical work for the cannery. In Oroville Eileene graduated from high school and was married soon after this to Cecil Gay. During the war my father worked at a local warehouse, taking care of the refrigeration and doing the mechanical work for them.

We looked forward to summer when usually relatives came to visit us. It was a fun time when Aunt Clara and Ralph came to see us, which they did quite often. One time Uncle Eugene and his family came too. Uncle Manuel came several times. Once Beth and Irene stayed a few days with us while their father went to Canada on business. Another time Manuel and Aunt Melinda came when the twins were just babies.

After I was married, Uncle Christie and Aunt Mattie came for visits, also Uncle Paul and Aunt Vera, Uncle Ted and Aunt Fern. The folks enjoyed their visits very much. In the fall, during hunting season, Uncle Fred and Aunt Ross would come. They always stopped to see us as well as the folks. Wally would spend time at our house visiting and playing with Loretta and Ed.

I graduated from high school in 1938. In July I married Bill Allstot. We have always lived in Tonasket, WA. Loretta and her family live in or near the Wenatchee, WA area so they aren't far. We have 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

When we first married Bill did trucking. After the war we purchased an orchard. We also had a farm warehouse, where we packed our fruit and some of our neighbors. This kept us and all of the children busy. In 1980 we sold our orchard and warehouse and retired. Six years later we had assumed the responsibility of the orchard again. As of now, we are still farming. It has been a busy life but never dull.

Katharine graduated from Oroville High School in 1942, going to college. At the close of World War II she married Don Mitchell, who had been in the U.S. Navy.
