August 2, 1944 (Friday)

Dear Mom,

I just got back from the most wonderful house party in Milwaukee. A young minister by the name of Hillman, son of Kenosha Hilmann, started a mission church in the suburbs of Milwaukee and he was having a shower or something and wanted some of us boys to come down and help out. So Wuddmann, Keturahat, and myself heeded the call.

Talk about homes, my oh my. Regular stone fireplace built in center of room, rock gardens etc. We had a nice bunch of women. Everything on the up and up and really fun. We played buncho most of the nite. Later in the evening a delicious lunch was served.

We already have an invite to another home for September 29. These people are giving party for Prof. Hilmer and so we were also invited. This is also a beautiful home. I was there tonight.

Their daughter can really play the pano. Not too good looking. Nice build. Her mother is a scream. Would like to have known her in her younger days. She is going to Downer college this coming year. The whole bunch was over at her house for a few minutes after the party.

From this letter you will gather that I got back from Chicago in fine shape. As I look back it was certainly a most educational weekend. The whole thing cost me about $11<ref> Equivalent of $155 in 2018</ref>; quite cheap for such a weekend.

I will send coupon book early part of next week. I left it in one of my books in class. By the way, did you get the two coupons I sent?

I have about three papers to write before vacation. One is 3000 words long, that being for Schaller. I just got one back from him. This was a much shorter paper and his comments were”Kruz und but”

I certainly haven’t been writing you much of late. There really isn’t much excuse for not being able to set aside a little time for this purpose, but if I wouldn't have been such a perfect jack you probably would have had your Sunday letter. You see, I dropped a letter in the box for you in Milwaukee tonight and just thought of it, that I didn’t address it. Oh well, just another letter for dead letter dept.

If you’d know the hour you would really appreciate this scrawling. Really, you would. But I guess I’m just an old night owl at heart anyway.

Say, a question about vacation. I want your frank opinion on this and it isn’t because I’m not anxious to get home. Please let me know your frank opinion. I’m sorry. No women are involved, but here is the deal.

We get out<ref>He was attending Sem</ref> at 10:30 on Friday. The 400 doesn’t leave until late and I get into New Ulm at 12 or later. Now I plan on visiting the Streick relation in Milwaukee. If I’d take the noon Hiawatha into cities on Friday I would be there a little after supper or so. I would continue next day, getting into New Ulm no later that 9 at night.

Now what I want to know is how you’re arranging your work. Would it fit in with your schedule if I come home then or would you perhaps be more busy at some other point in vacation. I would go up then. If you see my point, let me know.

Another thing, how do things stack up for a job? Celine Sleepy Eye or New Ulm MF.

I haven't written to Ruth and Norma about this idea. You see, if I come into New Ulm it’s always so late anyway and so I thought instead of your staying up so late this nite you could stay in shape and get lots of school work done on Saturday and have a little free time when I get home and I don’t mean to slave away in ??.<ref> Ruth and Norma are cousins and I believe lived in New Ulm at the time,</ref>

Write Soon,

Love,

Ralph
