It sounds like this was written near the end of Ralph's first quarter at Sem.

Sunday 1943

3:45 P.M.

Dearest Mother,

Just got done listening to Dr. Maier. I suppose by this time you are almost ready to board the train. I hope you got home OK. I slept for about an hour after you left. I ate my dinner up here. After dinner some of the boys came up for a while. After that I slept until about 2:30. I guess I must stretch my stomach again; it really felt tight after the meal. I even had to loosen my belt.

Now that you are gone, I’m first beginning to feel how much I really enjoyed and needed your visit. I hope next time you come, we won’t have to sit inside so much.

You needn’t worry. I don’t think I’ll be going to classes for awhile after all.

I drank about four large glasses of water with my dinner. I think that’s why I felt so full. It’s late afternoon now and I still feel full enough. It doesn’t look nice out today, so I am staying inside.

I’m rather itching to go to church. First time I can truthfully say that that happened to me. I suppose now think I’ve been a heathen all my life.

This letter should hold you until my first official report which will follow shortly.

I’m really really glad you were here.

Love,

Ralph
