Portland, January 7th 1925

Dear Child,

When Dad is out of the house, I use the time from then until Winfried gets up to write letters, to, over time, reduce my back log.

So, the nice... reached us in good condition & we say our best thanks for that. It contained things such as ducks(?), that we only know by name, they tasted great on new year's day and Winfred's girl <ref>Gertrude</ref> and her parents helped eat it, and completely, and with thanks for the ... givers of the good gift.

After the meal we all drove in Pastor Kranses? Sedan to the auditorium for the enjoyment of the Northfield Olaf Chor. It was really an extraordinarily nice treat, wonderful performance, the human voices created voices, that you wouldn't expect by them; at times it was, as if you'd hear a pipe organ played in the distance in the background, and then it was again like ..., you simply have to hear it.

They also had a nearly full Auditorium. If there were many Yankees(?), we don't know, as we had to accept a rather simple seat; but there are enough Swedes and Norwegians, that they at least get a full house, also the Yankee(?) has no taste for old church music. He first needs education for that.

So I don't forget, the fine cheese we received just right. At Christmas we ate it last and ration it since then, and it like with Pastor Polzins(?) bread, that's also around for so long, because his wife bakes such wonderful bread. Winfried eats nothing of the local cheese, but this one he happily accepts in his lunch and we can't help ourself, we have to, just because of the kindness, everything think of you, the wonderful donors.

Dad announced with a postcard that he will visit, you'll have received it in the meantime. Dad's studies continue, I forgot, when the exams are and then you still, after passed exam, shouldn't be chagrined by waiting until you get a job, even after asking(?).

Santa(?) has been friendly to us. Dad received from the woman's club of Cornelius on Christmas Eve $10. I think I wrote, that they now have their own pastor for about 3 weeks; at least that was nice; from Eugen we received $10, too, and from you as an extra the same, what seems to be not right to me, as I think, I don't want to burden(?) anyone.

Now dad earns money again and we have to accomodate somehow, but if his income stops completely we are really in need and we were quite close to that, namely at the time of the house rent payment of the last 2 months, but both times we had unexpected help, dad had, for example, a wedding in Cornelius, it brought us 15 cents(?) which was exactly the missing amount.

You can tell pastor Fritz(?), that the mission office wrote to dad back then, due to shortage of funds(?) the mission station here was shut down, therefore dad ... no help, even though... he would have done.

I will, from Alfred's ..., send me a bible with good thanks, as soon as I can come out of the business of the days after the holidays. I'm happy that Ralph is so pleased with the squabs <ref>A thick cushion, especially a flat one covering the seat of a chair or sofa </ref>. I was told the same should not break in an ordinary ..., therefore you, dear Klara, can already go in the kitchen, ...... the other part may well need more caution.

Ralph's suitcase, I bought already in July (first week(?)). I saw it in a shopping windows and went in immediately and bought it and I was happy that it was finally Christmas to send it away.

Timmie(?) got a ... of honey from me. When he was here in spring, I bought some honey for Amanda, because she didn't eat anything and, right, she ate a bread with honey. When Jimmie [or Timmie] got ready for bed in the kitchen, I saw him, quickly took a spoon and from the glass into the mouth, then another one, then a piece of... and honey again, and so on. I finally asked [original in english:] "it seems you like honey very fine?" then he asked have you seen that I ate, I haven't seen you, so I thought he should be able to eat some honey at his leisure.

Winfried received from his Gertrud home... brown-red and he gave her a Kimono (lavender and silk of course). We gave him a [english:] dress ..., which we wants to wear, when he's relocated to the office, what should happen soon.

Yesterday we received a letter from Amanda. She writes, when everything goes as planned, they will make Seattle as their home, they have a ... home, 3 room + bedroom with..., good rugs(?) and everything very comfortable ... built, oven and simply everything, in a kitchen a ... which is really ideal to cook and bake (at 35 ($?) a month). A view to Mount Rainier, the other side Lake Wash. where the [original english:] "higher up" enjoy themselves.... gets up from bed, and ... he had, when they went but Hans(?) wrote last week, that their Edgar(?) Paul, 8 months of age, has 8 teeth and starts to crawl.

Our cold wave has, thank God, ended, we had it certainly as bad as you, a man, a newspaper told, froze to death while driving in his car and another ... here in ...to get here, when the (freight) train stopped he froze so much, they had to chop off the hand to get him loose. It's so wet-and-cold here, that's more dangerous. Hap also went away in the blizzard. Then, when he arrived in Wash., he had nicer weather until Seattle.

Now ... you will be ... in the new house, much well-being, blessings, love and the peace of God, that the world can't give, in the same [ie God], make a house of God from it and what else could there be to wish you.

So I don't forget, Dad received from his firm $10 for Christmas. That was certainly unexpected. Those from(?) ... across the road? in the South Store, where we ..., send me some self-made bed-sheets and ..., that pastor Bast? now in ...I'm wondering, who they now get, he must have behaved horribly. Mrs. Hener(?) wrote, that it blushed the face and it was nearly impossible to go to church...

I can't understand how it's possible to keep such a man in office/authority, as he's an obvious offense for the old and a ... for the youth. What guilt is it that the officers of the synod put on themselves! by the way... it's a place for Pastor(?) Baur, the house is supposedly wonderful, as Mrs Sihnnling(?) wrote.

You wrote in your letter that the women baked cakes for the bazaar, for the next I'm appending you a recipe, and wanted to the cake was sold in a ..., including the recipe, for 10 Cents(?) a piece, every ..., that you find in the bible ... it's a bit interesting. I bought a piece, it tasted well, haven't tried it yet [to bake, presumably], I didn't want to go through the trouble, it's something for you, it's possible, that you have to search in the English Bible As dad again ...serves something, Winfr. can't get a passport for us, so if no job gets us to Minn. or Dak., we won't be able to come. ... the paper of your district we received, many thanks, something new, something better than the "Evangelist"(?) [another paper, presumably].

We're glad that Ackermann took Alfred to .... How is Mrs Ackermann? She isn't quite the [lady?] of the old days, but the setbacks change people, but in spite of everything I still like her. Mrs Heidmann(?) is one of ... indeed except for Mrs Beuder(?), one of the first ... knew in this country, who has died.

After La Crescent I only saw her once (... in New Ulm) but she was and stay in good recollection and in my heart; ...is one of my first acquaintances and he, too, I still regard with friendliness and wish him a full recovery.

Now I have to wait for dad to write the address, I don't have the new address in my mind. My heartfelt thanks and best wishes for a blessed new year, finished in love, Mom

Wenn Papa aus dem Hause ist, benütze ich die Zeit von da, bis Winfried aufsteht zum Briefeschreiben, um allmählich meinen Haufen Briefschulden aufzuräumen. Also der schöne ... hat uns in guter Verfassung erreicht & wir sagen unsern allerbesten Dank dafür. Er enthielt? Dinge? z.B. Enten?, die wir hier nur den Namen nach kennen, sie? schmeckten? fein? am Neujahrstag + wurden von Winfr. Mädchen + deren Eltern helfen? aufgegessen, + zwar gründlich, + mit Danksagung gegen die ... Geber der guten Gabe. Nach? dem Essen fuhren? wir alle in Pastor Kranses? Sedan? zum Auditorium um den Genuß von? Northfield Olaf Chor mitzugenießen. Es war wirklich ein selten schöner Genuß, wundervolle Leistungen, die menschlichen Stimmen brachten Töne hervor, die man nicht bei ihnen vermutet, zu Zeiten

--- war es, als hörte man eine in der Ferne gespielte Orgel durchhallen, dann war es wieder wie ..., man muß es einfach gehört haben. Sie hatten auch ein fast besetztes Auditorium. Ob viele Yankees? dabei waren, wissen wir nicht, denn wir nahmen mit einem mehr bescheidenen Sitz vorlieb; doch es sind? genug Schweden? + Norweger?, daß man ein volles Haus immerhin bekommt, auch fehlt eben dem Yankee? der Geschmack an alter Kirchenmusik, er muß erst? dazu erzogen? werden. Daß ich nicht vergesse, den feinen? Käse haben wir? richtig erhalten, am? Christfest zum l. mal davon gegessen + teilen ihn seitdem weiter? ein, + es geht mit ihr wie mit Pastor? Polzins? Brot, das immer so lange vorhält, weil seine Frau solch vorzügliches Brot bäckt. Winfried ißt von hiesigem Käse? nichts, aber diesen läßt er sich gerne in seinen lunch tun u. man kann sich schon gar nicht helfen, man muß schon der Güte wegen, jedes mal an Euch liebe Geber? denken. Papa zeigte auf einer Postkarte seine Erscheinung an, werdet sie unterdessen erhalten haben. Papas Studium geht fort, ich habe vergessen, wann Examination ist, + dann ist es so,

man darf sich, nach bestandenem Examen, das Warten ja nicht verdrießen lassen bis man eine Stelle bekommt, ja nach Nachfrage. Santa? war gewiß freundlich zu uns. Papa erhielt vom Frauenverein v. Cornelius am hl. Abend 10$, ich denke ich schrieb, daß sie nun ihren eigenen Pastor haben seit etwa 3 Wochen; immerhin das war schön; von Eugen erhielten wir auch 10, + von Euch als Extrazugabe dasselbe, was mir nicht ganz richtig vorkommt, denn ich meine, ich mag niemand ausziehen?, jetzt verdient ja Papa wieder u. man muß sich eben einrichten, wenn sein Verdienst ganz aufhört sind wir aller- dings in Not + wir waren hart am Rande derselben, namentlich zur Zeit der Hausmiete der? letzten 2 Monate, aber dann kam beider- male unvermutet Hilfe, Papa hatte z.B. in Cornelius eine Trauung, die brachte 15¢? das war gerade der Fehlbetrag. Dem hl.? Pastor Fritz? könnt Ihr sagen, daß die Missionsbehörde Papa damals schrieb, aus Mangel an Funds? sei die Missionsstation hier aufgehoben, so das? Papa keine Hilfe ..., obwohl ... er dennoch getan hätte. Ich werde von

Alfreds extra? ... mir eine Bibel mit gutem Dank kommen lassen, sobald ich etwas aus dem Gedränge der Nachfeiertage heraus bin. Das freut mich, daß Ralph solche Freude? an den Täubchen? hat, mir wurde gesagt? die- selben sollen nicht zerbrechen bei einem gewöhnl. ..., somit kannst du l. Klara schon in die Küche gehen, ... sie nicht ... der andere Teil mag wohl mehr Vorsicht brauchen. Ralph's suit case kaufte ich schon im Juli (1. Woche?), da sah ich ihn an? einem? Schau- fenster + ging gleich hinein + kaufte ihn, + war froh, daß endlich Weihn. kam um ihn fortschicken zu können. Timmie? bekam ein ... Honig von mir, als er? im Frühjahr? hier war, kaufte? ich etwas Honig für Amanda, weil sie nichts aß, + richtig sie aß ein Honigbrot, als Jimmie sich für Bett? in der Küche fertig machte, sah er ihn, schnell einen Löffel + vom Glas in Mund, dann noch einen, dann ein Stück ... + wieder zum Honig + s.f. ich fragte endlich it seems you like honey very fine? dann fragte er hast du gesehen, daß ich gegessen habe, ich sah dich nicht, so dachte ich er soll einmal in Ruhe Honig lecken? können. Winfried bekam von seiner Gertrud einen?

Haus... braun-rot + er gab ihr einen Kimono (lavendel, Seide natürlich). Wir gaben ihm einen dress ..., welchen er tragen will, wenn er in die Office versetzt wird, was bald geschehen sollte. Gestern hatten wir einen Br. von Amanda, sie schreibt, wenn alles komme wie sie dachten, werden sie Seattle zu ihrem Heim machen, sie haben ein ... Haus, 3 room + Schlafgemach mit ..., gute rugs? u. alles sehr bequem ... errichtet, Ofen + einfach alles, in der Küche einen ... wel- cher geradezu ideal zum kochen + backen sei (zu 35 im Monat). Aussicht auf Mount Rainier an der anderen Seite Lake Wash. wo die higher up sich vergnügen. ... steht in seinem Bett jetzt auf, + ... hatte er, als sie gingen doch Hans? schrieb letzte Woche, daß ihr Edgar? Paul, 8 Monate alt, 8 Zähne habe + zu kriechen beginne. Unsere kalte Welle ist, Gott sei Dank, gebrochen, wir fahren? hier gewiß so schlimm wir ihr, ein? Mann, stand in der Zeitung, verfron? beim Fahren? in seinem Auto + ein ander? ... hier auf ...

hier zu gehen, als die train, (Fracht) hielt war er so steif gefroren, daß sie die Hand abhacken mußten um ihn los zu bekommen, hier ist es eben so naßkalt, das ist empfindli-? cher. Hap? ging auch im Schneesturm ... fort, dann als er in Wash. ein-fuhr, hatte er schöner Wetter bis Seattle. Jetzt ... Ihr doch ... im neuen Haus sein, viel Wohlergehen, Segen, Liebe + Friede Gottes, welchen die Welt nicht geben kann, in demselben, machet eine Hütte Gottes daraus u. was mehr könnte da noch zum wünschen übrig bleiben. Daß ich nicht ver- gesse, Papa? bekam von seiner Firm? 10$ zu Weihn., das war gewiß unerwart- et. Die aus? ... über die road? im South Store, da? wo? wir ..., schicken? mir ein paar selbst verfertigte Bettenbezüge + ..., daß Pastor Bast? jetzt in ... mich soll wundern?, wen sie jetzt bekommen, der muß es aber doch schlimm getrieben haben. Mrs. Hener? schrieb mir, daß es einem die Schamesröte ins Gesicht trieb u. es einem fast unmöglich war zur Kirche zu gehen.

Ich kann nicht verstehen wie man einem solchen Mann kann ein Amt belassen, da er ein offenbares Ärgernis für das Altem? ist + ein ... für die Jugend. was Schuld laden da die Beamten der Synode auf sich! Übrigens ... das ein Platz für Pastor? Baur, das Haus soll großartig sein, wie Frau Sihnnling? schrieb. Du schriebst in einem Br. daß Ihr Frauen Kuchen zum Basar gebacken habt, ich ... dir zum nächsten ein Rezept bei, + wollte es ... tun, der Kuchen wurde in einen? Schr...? verkauft, samt Rezept, für 10 Cents? das Stück, jeder ..., daß man ihn aus der Bibel zusammen? suchen ... ists ein wenig interessant. Ich kaufte ein Stück, er schmeckte gut, probiert habe ich ihn noch nicht, ich mochte mir nicht die Mühe nehmen, das ist was für dich, es kann sein, daß du's? in der Engl.? Bibel suchen mußt. Da Papa? wieder etwas ... dienen? tut, kann Winfr. keinen Paß? bekommen für uns, so wenn kein Beruf? uns nach

Minn. o. Dak. bringt, werden wir nicht kommen können. ... das Blatt? von Eurem? Distrikt? haben wir erhalten, schönen Dank, ist mal wieder was neues, was Besseres wie der Evangelist?. Das freut uns, daß Ackermann Alfred zum paradieren? nahm. Wie ist Frau Ackermann, sie ist nicht mehr ganz die ... von früher, aber die Schicksalsschläge machen eben andere Menschen, aber trotz alledem ich habe sie noch immer lieb. In Frau Heidmann? ist eine von ... eigentl. außer Frau Beuder?, ersten ... kannten in diesem Lande zur ewigen Ruhe abgerufen. Nach La Crescent sah ich sie nur einmal wieder? (... in New Ulm) doch war + blieb sie immer in guter Erinnerung? in meinem Herzen; ... zählt zu meinen 1. Bekanntschaften + auch ihm bin ich noch immer gut gesonnen + wünsche ihm völlige Wiederherstellung. Jetzt muß ich warten, daß Papa die Adresse schreibt, habe die neue Adresse noch nicht in meinem Kopf. Mit tiefgefühltem Dank u. besten Wünschen zu einem gesegneten neuen Jahr schließt in Liebe Mama.
