Ernest M. Hanson

Assistant Superintendent and Supervisor of Mathematics and Science

December 27, 1928

Dear Mrs. Baur:

For some time I have been wondering how I could show you that I appreciated beyond words your efficiency and kindly attitude as my secretary in New Ulm. I have missed you a great deal since coming to Salt Lake City. The girls here do not seem to be so willing to put in a day's work as you were. I was always amazed at the rapidity with which you turned out our reports and all types of mimeograph jobs. I have never had a secretary before or since that could do as well.

Did Mabel ever get a job? I felt sorry for her as she was so anxious to find full time employment.

Some time ago I read of your little car accident. You were very fortunate that nothing more serious happened. This type of accident happens every day. Perhaps you read of the accident here that killed 24 persons in a school bus. Several high school students will go through life with one arm or one leg as a result of the accident. Two families had two children each taken from them.

So New Ulm will break in another new superintendent next year. I haven’t heard a word about candidates being considered. Have they made a decision? According to letters from teachers they are somewhat concerned about it. I presume whenever there is a change you are also, in a small degree, concerned as it always means a change in methods and an adjustment to another unknown type of disposition. You have nothing to worry about so far as a job is concerned as I know you can please any superintendent.

When the Salt Lake City superintendent came here he changed secretaries at the end of the first year. I feel sorry for her as she is now teaching in one of the schools and is very much dissatisfied.

A superintendent is also concerned about future superintendents. Certain types of men are always looking for opportunities to criticize the work of predecessors. If I did anything to discredit the work of Mr. Andreen I certainly was not conscious of it. At the first faculty meeting I took time to praise the work done by Mr. Andreen and defended him many times in the community and at school board meetings. I don't worry at all about Mr. Bauer as I think he is a high type of fellow but no one knows what kind will be there in the future.

If criticism develops concerning the new building or past policies I shall be glad to get them as sometimes there is misunderstanding and frequently they don’t have all of the information.

How is Ralph enjoying school this year. I hope he will enter the ministry and enjoy it as much as my brother does. Ralph is a bright young fellow who will make good.

Again expressing my sincere appreciation for you fine work and the special courtesies extended to me during my three years in New Ulm and extending to you my good wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.

I am Sincerely Ernest M. Hanson

P.S. If you should be applying for a better position at anytime don’t hesitate to use my name as a reference. I shall be glad to give you a superior type of recommendation.
