Jaus Christmas Barn

Curious... how many of you have a barn under your Christmas tree that is part of the Jaus tradition? Please post a picture under this string of your tree and the barn.
When Grandma Jaus<ref>Olivia Schilling Jaus</ref> had her auction, we purchased this one that was theirs. We paid less than $5 and I don't think the auctioneer thought it had any value of any kind. I was over the moon excited since we had one growing up. Lyla Baur<ref>Lyla Jaus Baur</ref> or Marvel Jaus<ref>Marvel Jaus Vorwerk</ref> would maybe know the history or year of this particular barn. Rachel Harris posted a picture of the barn under their tree which started this conversation on Facebook.

Uncle Mike made the one my parents had. My dad had one for all of us kids and now Warren made one for all of our kids and is starting on the grandchildren now. Our oldest one is getting married in 2017 and she already knows that will be their wedding present.

This is one from 2004. I made it out of wood I had left from building my big barn.

The old one I made in the 80s had finally broken apart. On the old stable I made an end of the roof very over-extended so the camels would have a "camel port" to park in.

Terri grew up with a white nativity on the fireplace mantle her Mom made. Her Mom made a complete set for each of my kids, each in a different style. Bethany's has an indian theme, another is Precious Moments, and another Hummel. Mrs. Amos made Becky's set using the same style my Mom used for making sets, but painted them white like the original Amos set.

Mrs. Amos made the main three figures in our set. Terri completed the set.

We combined three traditions. The Jaus stable, The Amos style nativity, and the Baur "Charlie Brown" tree.

Blue LIghts! Who has all blue lights? I love the soft glow the old blue bulbs gave. The tradition came from Dad's side of the family. He told me it is because blue light bulbs were the cheapest to buy!

This is a barn Uncle Marty made just for my precious Moments Nativity. My first year putting it under the tree....... Already one casualty.

Our first Christmas I had the nativity Grandma Amos made under our tree but didn't have a stable for it. Now the only nativity under our tree is Fischer Price. :) Our first tree also had blue ornaments in place of blue lights, but those have gradually been replaced by kid-made treasures.

We had a stable that John made for the beautiful navity set that your mom (Lyla) made for us. We had to put it on the mantle though with Christmas lights so no wild children would break it. Throughout out the years, the stable had be thrown away as it would not stay together any more, but still have the navity set on the mantle with fond memories as from where it came.

Singing Silent Night in German.
I jokingly said at a Sunday school party I could sing Silent Night in German..... Sang it that night and then our pastor had me sing it at our candle light service...... And I didn't cry, either. (But I DID when we sang it in English and our congregation broke into harmony! Wanted to be home RIGHT THEN! Back home at my momma and daddy's house! Tears this year.... Lots if them!

Merry Christmas to all my dear cousins. The 2 remaining matriarchs, the 20 cousins, and now the next 2 generations (how is that even possible since the 20 of us are still so young!😉) are now scattered across the US. Yet distance and time cannot alter what is in each of us because of our blessed heritage. We have all formed our own family traditions through the years yet so much of "our" things are a result of what has been passed down by our parents, grandparents, and the generations before that. Thanks to that heritage, we all celebrate a story of family at this time of year. God and his son, Mary and Joseph and their new family, and now each of our families. God's word truly is our great heritage. And whether that is celebrated with barns under trees, stollen and pfeffernuess, favorite carols (hopefully still occasionally singing Silent Night as Stille Nacht), or whatever else stirs something deep inside, I thank God at this Christmas time for my gift of a wonderful extended family and all we share

  • Rachel Harris This is actually the 2nd one my grandpa made. The first is identical and is the one my mom and Uncle John grew up with. It's currently at my uncles but will be going to Mark.
    • Jim Baur Very neat, Rachel Harris! I imagine your grandpa made the one Claire Doelger has for my grandparents. Does yours have a curve on the side of it like Claires?
    • Rachel Harris No
  • KarenxSteven Gilreath Mom had this same nativity set and gary and I would always put Mary and Joseph in the manger with Jesus........ "And they found Mary and Joseph and the baby in the manger!"..... All of them in the manger! Yep! Biblical!<ref>2016 FB post</ref>
