My dear niece Clara On 11 Jan I was diector, as I dealt with inheritance matters in Stuttgart. But as neither my sister nor I was at home, I drove to Kirchheim diectly on another day to learn more.

It concerned your savings book that he wanted to bring to me, but as the names of the 10 siblings weren't recorded and on Saturday the office isn't open, we agreed that he should send me the savings book.

Herr Rapp came again on Friday. My sister received him, [he] brought the booklet that I should look after.We'll have to wait for the military registration.I enclose the papers he left with me.

Herr Rapp told me that the relatives of Aunt Luise were not in agreement.They want initially to inherit jointly and later they will sort things out amongst themselves.

Herr Rapp told me that everybody he has told about the inheritance and asked whether they agreed have answered him, except for the Schneiders in Stuttgart. Erika thought that is so true.

Mannfred would surely also like to decline but today everyone has to give 60 to get 40 of the new money. Always brutal and so I avoid it.

Page 2: I am eager to hear from Erich whether he got his money in good time. He was here 10 days ago to see the authorities. He wants to register for student accommodation Then he described an empty apartment in Halle. I advised him to take it if the housing department offers it. Three days later I got a message that I should come to Halle Tuesday and Wednesday for the house warming. We've had some good weather, It is terrible to live so completely out in the country & the mood [?] that one has in bad weather.

Once again they [no idea who "they" are] have to take tenants but they are from Wurttemberg and at least everyone has their own room. 2 1/4 rooms; by 1/4 I mean a smaller room...like a pantry but Gertrud can get some furniture in.

Today is a day of grieving according to the priest in the church... it's not so bad, the worst lies ahead!

I was quite annoyed because we're no longer allowed to send anything to Chemnitz? [could be a Czech family name?] Everything had been arranged but it was not accepted. The chosen one's rule over the water [I assume this is a proverb meaning there's nothing one can do about it]. We, i.e. my niece's husband gave it [no explanation of what "it" is...possibly food, or something with a short shelf-life?] away elsewhere & perhaps it will be allowed again, but then immediately. I have little hope, things don't look rosy.

You can believe me, I think about you all daily. It is such a shame that we are so very far apart. I don't give up the hope of seeing you again. Please write soon. Have you already planted your garden? I now have a source where I can get salad and vegetables without having to queue

The letter is not entirely self-explanatory so presumably it's part of a continuing dialogue.

I got the impression that a relative had died and the surviving family were deciding what to do with assetts...including the savings ...so instead of having the lawyers sell any property, the would inherit "en masse" and decide among themselves how to divide...quite possibly some of the younger beneficiaries might have liked to keep the property in the family whereas others just wanted cash as soon as they could get it. "Schneider" means tailor but I assume it's a family name instead of a trade, but if there are loads of tailors from Stuttgart in Clara's background I could be wrong!

The exchange of old for new I assumed was an offer to exchange Reichmarks (i.e. the currency under the Nazis) for the Deutschmark...and I suppose we'd all find it painful having 30% lopped off every time we exchanged money!

I assume that any such process will be documented on the interweb.

Those are examples of what has to be deduced...not sure how good I am at reading between lines!
