This is a copy of a portion of a letter from Major Courtney to Colonel Nelson. It looks like a previous draft deferment request had been made and denied.

Copy

Body of Major Courtenay's letter to Colonel Nelson regarding Ralph Baur.

Dated September 11, 1944

Reference is made to your August 2 communication addressed to your Brown County Local Board, copy of which was forwarded to this office. The information referred to in the last paragraph thereof appears to have been filed with the local board by Lutheran Theological Seminary, Thiensville, Wisconsin, notwithstanding which fact the registrant has been ordered to appear for induction on September 17.

We are now in receipt of a communication dated September 5, 1944, copy of which we understand was sent to your office. The same appears to be self-explanatory. For your information we enclose herewith a copy of a letter which on June 21, 1944, we addressed to the president of Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin (the school in which registrant was formerly enrolled). Notwithstanding our advice to the effect that "your request for relief must be directed to the Minnesota State Director who alone enjoys the right to force the issue if he is so disposed," the Wisconsin State Director has again been approached with a request for relief from the scheduled induction.

Without in any sense wishing or intending to intrude into a matter which lies exclusively within the jurisdiction of your office, we bring these matters to your attention for such action as you may deem to be appropriate.
