Fires in New Ulm, MN

1930, January 28. Kretsch Auto Co. garage (Meyer Studio).

1930, November 1. Log cabin in Turner Hall Park (cabin was erected by the Junior Pioneers of New Ulm in 1918.

1933, April 28. Cereal Mill (former City Mill) of New Ulm Roller Mill Co.

1936, January 24. State Bank corner. The following four downtown buildings were destroyed: State Bank, Muesing Drug Store, Bee Hive, and Dr. H.O. Schleuder Jewelry Store and optometry department. The following tenants were wiped out: Dr. J.H. Vogel and O.J. Seifert, medical clinic; Drs. C.W. Miller and Alfred Groebner, dentist,; Alfred J. Vogle, real estate and loans; Attorneys Somsen, Dempsey, Johnson and Somsen; J.R. Higgs, insurance; Albert D. Flor, law office, and Dr. E.G. Lang, dental office. The fire was fought in 3 degree below zero weather.

1947, January 18. Geib-Janni building (on Center Street behind Klossner State Bank). Said to be the most disastrous fire since the January 24, 1936 fire. The building was used as a storehouse for the Cudahy Packing Co.

1947, August 24. Kaiserhoff (221 North Minnesota Street).

1952, January 8. Turner Hall (third Turner Hall).

1957, April 26. The five story rye and corn mill of the old Eagle Roller Mill (owned by International Milling Co.).

1961, May 30. Esser Bar (now the Office Bar.

1961, June 24. Granstra’s Half-Hour Laundromat (Second North Street by the New Ulm Telephone Co.).

1966, December 20. Red Hen Produce. Was being remodeled by Dr. Add Rotramel (305 North Minnesota Street).

1967, January 19. Backer Drug and Camera (103 North Minnesota Street).

1967, January 22. Green Clothiers (101 North Minnesota Street).

1970, July 31. Stork Bros. building. The building was being used by Tri-State Crease and Tallow Co. as a warehouse and contained about 150,000 pounds of grease (the site is now the new post office).

1971, April 23. Ben Franklin Store (126 North Minnesota Street).

1972, March 21, Lampert Lumber (211 North Third Street).

1974, February 26. Park and recreation building (North of German Park).

1974, October 17. Grandstand at the fairgrounds.

1979, March 29. C & J Liquors (corner of Fifth North and Stae Streets).

1979, November 11. Dongus building (corner of First South and Minnesota Streets).
