I will not repeat the early years of Grandpa Ludwig Lieske, but will continue where I left off earlier.

The Michael Gabbert homestead was turned over to our grandparents, Ludwig and Amelia, when they were married in 1874, at the ages of 21 and 18. They were God-fearing, ambitious, hardworking people that prospered through the years. They resided in the old log house until 1887 when they built a large, new house for their growing family, which at that time numbered five. They eventually had twelve children.

Grandpa Ludwig was a venturous man, always ready to try the new to improve farming and community conditions, a trait he certainly passed on to his family. The first hand-poured silo in Minnesota was built on his farm in 1910. In 1912 he laid the first drainage tile in the community. A factory for the making the tile was located on his farm. He also had the first purebred Holstein cattle herd in the community. He and his younger sons operated the Cloverdale Stock Farm, and in 1920 stated delivering fresh milk and cream to several businesses in Henderson. Earney began a home delivery route in 1923. George later had a home delivery service from his farm. A.L. Lieske and sons were involved in many community ventures - establishing the Starr Creamery, The Farmers and Merchants Bank and the Henderson Mercantile Company<ref>Google Book indicates this was a $10,000 investment in 1917. </ref><ref>MN Historical Museum</ref> They were also active members of numerous association. In 1938 Albert, Fred and Louie formed the Lieske Lumber Company. They bought thirty-one acres of bottom land along the Minnesota River and set up a lumber camp which employed 20 men. The Lieske family seemed to have a finger in each and every pie. Most important of all, they were deeply involved in their church. This also held true for the women.

The A.L. Lieskes continued to live in the house they had built in 1886 until 1925, when son Ernst was married. Ernst and his new bride moved into the old house, and a retirement home, the stucco house, was erected a short distance from the original house in which the parents resided until they were called home by their Lord. Rose, Albert and Charlie, a hired hand, moved into the new house with the parents. Rose faithfully cared for her parents until the time of their deaths. Grandma Amelia died December 28, 1932 at age 76, and Grandpa Ludwig died July 22, 1936 at age 83. They had been married nearly 58 years, having celebrated their fiftieth anniversary in 1924. Their Lord had been good to them, and they were able to provide a farm for five of their six sons. Louie, the youngest, was the only one not engaged in farming.

Marvel was one of the flower girls at Grandpa Lieske’s funeral. You may wonder what a flower girls had to do with a funeral. Visitations were held in the home, where the floral arrangements were also taken. Young girls, usually granddaughters, were selected to carry these floral sprays from the house to the hearse, and again from the hearse into the church at the time of the service. After the service, these girls again carried them out of the church back to the hearse, to be transported to the cemetery. There they again had to be carried to the grave site. These floral sprays all remained at the grave site. Floral sprays were kept at a minimum those days, and were mostly from family members. I remember being very disappointed that day. I was one of seven girls selected to serve as flower girl, but being the youngest, was the one to be eliminated when only six were needed. It was a real let-down for an eight year old.
